By J. Kessl
After weeks of research and pulling out our hair, my wife and I decided to go with this mattress. We just received this mattress yesterday and are very happy with it.Just some things you might want to consider to make an informed decision.A. Coils. More coils mean a firmer mattress. More coils also mean more weight. The type of gauge steel also matters. Even though this mattress has 150 coils, the 13.5 gauge steel used (vs 15.5 on most mattresses) makes it quite firm while still being supportive and comfortable.B. Materials - the more organic and renewable materials in a mattress, the higher the price (usually). Does organic matter to you for something that may never touch your baby's skin? If so, expect to pay more. Do you want an all coir mattress? Expect to pay $400 or so.C. Allergens - Any mattress that uses coir or coconut can be an allergen. If you have a history of tree nut, soy, or other allergies, watch what you buy. Most "eco friendly" mattress contain allergens.D. Waterproof - If you want something washable and pretty much impervious to stuff, your main choice is vinyl. Some mattresses have other types of plastic and are substantially more expensive. Otherwise, get a good mattress pad.E. Breathability - Most are breathable to some extent. Those that are covered in plastic are less breathable. My wife and I found mattresses covered in plastic unacceptable.D. Weight - Someone needs to change those sheets. If buying a heavy mattress, make sure there is someone to help change sheets, especially if you have a history of C sections. Foam mattresses are lighter than innerspring. In some cases, the weight difference is substantial.E. Price - How much should you spend? Is your baby going to care about brand names, etc. (the answer is no...that is a learned trait)? Are you going to have to work more to afford this mattress? If so, save your money, get a cheaper mattress, and spend that extra time working with your baby.F. Firmness - Make sure the mattress is firm and supportive. You should only have a sheet and a mattress pad at most on the mattress. Some mattresses feel mushy and springy. I would not recommend those. If it feels reasonably firm like a slightly underinflated football, it should be fine. Don't get caught up in this. I found that name brand all-soy foam mattress were unaccptably springy.G. Foam vs. Innerspring - You will do fine with both. Be leery of the steel used, edge support, etc. There are pros and cons for each. Foam is generally firmer, cheaper, and lighter. Innersprings are heavier, offer better edge support, and have more selection. Both can sag, have bad smells, etc. If baby likes to stand on the edge of the bed along the rail, keep in mind that foam mattresses do not have edge support.Pros:1. Mattress is quite firm but supportive. In terms of firmness, this is one of the firmer mattresses we have seen. It relates favorably to a Stearns and Foster crib mattress and Simmons mattress. It is not anywhere near as firm as the Colgate foam mattress, it is substantially more supportive.2. This mattress is supportive. We could not find anything that said just how firm a mattress needed to be.3. No off-gassing from the mattress. Odor is similar to that of new non-organic clothes.4. Despite not having any holes, mattress is somewhat breathable. We were concerned about foam mattress trapping our daughter's heat too much. Heat and airflow are probably the biggest concern for SIDS next to firmness of mattress. This mattress appears to be breathable through the fiber due to the coir and cotton layers. Coir is extremely water and air permeable.5. Fit is good. We cannot place more than a finger in between each side of the bed. It is not too tight so you cannot easily take out the mattress. We have a Stanley American crib and are fairly happy with the fit. Make sure to measure first. We noticed some mattresses are as much as 1.5 inches off standard. Make sure your crib can support it with sheets and a mattress pad.6. Edge Support. We were concerned that our daughter might be injured on a cheaper mattress or a foam mattress. Foam mattresses do not have edge support. This mattress has good edge support (9.0 gauge steel) but not fantastic. If you want fantastic edge support, look for a lower gauge number for edge support. Remember, you may sacrifice comfort for doing so.7. Packaging was minimal with just a box and the plastic wrapper for the mattress.8. We got a FANTASTIC price of under a benjamin and a half TOTAL.9. Finish - There are no lose threads or any seam issues we can see.Cons:1. Cotton cover is not waterproof or organic. Organic does not matter to us much. Renewable items do and this mattress has it. If you want organic, be prepared to spend more or get a mattress that is less comfortable. We are planning on getting a protect-a-bed mattress pad to prevent nasty staining and such. It has worked fantastically on our bed as it is both breathable and waterproof. The zippered kind should also limit allergen risks from the coir.2. Internal Coir fiber is a potential allergen (think tree nut). Not sure what foam is made of.3. Mattress is heavier than a foam mattress.4. This mattress is not advertised as having a "comfort" side. Comfort sides add cost to a mattress. Most publications agree that this is a useless gimmick that makes little if none difference to the child. To some, however, this is a con.Overall - a nice mattress, some allergen concerns, breathable, very firm and supportive, good price, lots of renewable material, not waterproof, not organicNote 1: The weight measurement of this listing is not accurate at 50+ pounds. With box, it is closer to 25 pounds.Note 2: Our daughter is still inside mommy so review could change if she hates it. I will post a picture if I have time.

As a first time mom I was super obessive about choosing a mattress for my son. After purchasing a top rated "Nature" mattress for his cradle and being VERY disappointed, I wanted to make sure that his crib mattress would not be another purchase that I would waste mountains of money in order to buy a good, safe, eco product for 3 times the price as comparable products and then have to put him to sleep in his pack and play due to the product being crap. Thus defeating the purpose of organic mattress, bedding, etc. since he slept in regular old pack 'n play. Unfortunately, no where locally carried this product so, once again I had to go out on a limb and purchase a product without seeing it. I am SO glad I did. Granted, he has not spent the night in this yet, but loves laying in there and playing. I have included the following info. for other neurotic mothers like myself, considering this purchase. Why this mattress:1.I liked that it was a more organic option. Granted it is not totally organic, but as stated previously I had the more organic "nature" product as a cradle mattress and hated it (way to soft). Without spending over $500 on a product I had never seen, I decided this was a better eco choice.2.Like the idea of coil mattress over a foam mattress due to the breathablity.Plus, have a very active little boy and wanted something with side supports that will endure him standing in crib3.Colgate foam mattress has consistently been the highest rated mattress in various publications and figured this would follow with their high quality.4. Made in USA in a family run, long standing company.5. FIRM and no chemical smellI will try to remember to post a follow up to this review after we have used it for a considerable amount of time for overnight sleeping. Only reason not 5 stars was due to this.update: Been using for over a year and still love mattress! Firmness has not been compromised, fits safely in crib, and no side sagging. No complaints and has held up beautifully despite very active toddler's jumping and running!Worth every penny.

I bought this about a year ago and my daughter have been sleeping in it for over a half a year now. The mattress is still holding up and its firmness hasn't changed. It's still like new.
